U2 have released a new recording of The Pogues’ “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” as a tribute to late frontman and songwriter Shane MacGowan. The cover is featured on the upcoming album “20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan,” a 36-track collection scheduled for Nov. 13.
Originally released by The Pogues in 1988, “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” showcases MacGowan’s combination of punk intensity and distinctive songwriting. U2’s rendition gives the song a larger, more expansive rock treatment while retaining the energy of the original. The release also continues the longstanding connection between U2 and MacGowan; following his death at 65 in December 2023, U2 performed The Pogues’ “A Rainy Day in Soho” in his memory.
U2 guitarist The Edge reflected on MacGowan’s influence, describing the songwriter as an artist whose work brought together Irish folk traditions, political history, humor and romance. “Shane MacGowan was full of contradictions—and that’s where the truth of him lived,” The Edge said, emphasizing the qualities that made MacGowan’s music distinctive and enduring.
The tribute album was assembled in partnership with MacGowan’s widow, Victoria Mary Clarke, and his sister, Siobhan MacGowan, and draws contributions from artists including Bruce Springsteen, Hozier, Tom Waits, The Libertines, Primal Scream, Steve Earle and Dropkick Murphys. At least 50% of the artists’ royalties from the project will go to Dublin Simon Community, supporting people experiencing homelessness in Dublin, a cause MacGowan supported during his lifetime.
