Grammy Award-winning musician and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Sheryl Crow has released a new single titled “Freight Train,” offering fans a deeper preview of her forthcoming studio album, Pick You Up, scheduled for digital release on Oct. 9. Physical formats, including CD and vinyl editions, will follow the initial digital release on Nov. 20.
Issued via Old Green Barn Productions in partnership with Thirty Tigers, the slow-paced, contemplative ballad marks the opening track of the seven-song collection. ‘Freight Train‘ explores universal feelings of isolation, internal contemplation, and shared human experiences across everyday settings. Reflecting on the personal inspiration behind the recording, Crow explained in a statement, “So many times in my life I have felt alone, even when surrounded by people. I think we all feel that way sometimes. This song is about the knowingness that we are not alone in feeling that way and that it will pass.”
Produced and written alongside her long-time creative collaborator Jeff Trott at her home studio in Nashville, Pick You Up centers on thematic elements of hope, human connection, and perseverance through difficult societal moments. Describing the overarching emotional impact she hopes the music provides to listeners, Crow previously noted, “There is a lot of chaos all around us and I definitely find myself feeling alone. My wish is that whoever hears these songs feels the hope I feel when I sing them. I hope these songs feel like a soothing moisturizer on our chapped hearts.”
“Freight Train” arrives as the second promotional track from the forthcoming record, following the release of the lead single “Freedom Bus,” a collaboration with singer-songwriter Jesse Welles that debuted in mid-August. The full track list features seven original pieces, rounded out by “Perfect,” “Pick You Up,” “Flat Earth,” “I’ve Got Your Number,” and “Heaven Help Us.”
