The life, artistry, and enduring impact of late Rush drummer Neil Peart will be commemorated in a documentary scheduled to premiere on Canada’s CBC network on Sept. 23. Produced by Banger Films, “Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple” chronicles the musician’s journey from his early days gigging in Canada and London to his meteoric rise as one of rock music’s defining lyricists and percussionists. Peart died in 2020 at age 67 following a private battle with glioblastoma.
The project highlights newly filmed rehearsal sessions featuring surviving Rush members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson performing signature tracks with acclaimed guest drummers. Joining the duo behind the kit are Danny Carey of Tool, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Stewart Copeland of The Police. While Carey and Smith previously performed with Lee and Lifeson at a 2022 tribute concert, the documentary marks the first time the Rush founders have jammed with Copeland, who was a longtime friend of Peart.
In addition to the musical collaborations, the release includes discussions between Lee and Lifeson alongside commentary from prominent drummers analyzing Peart’s influence and technique. Archival recordings also capture Peart directly reflecting on his relentless dedication to his instrument. In an archival interview featured in the film, Peart says, “I think it matters for me to play better all the time, and to play my best all the time, to keep it fresh and changing. It’s kind of my responsibility, I see it, as a drummer.”
Following its television debut in Canada, “Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple” is anticipated to reach international distribution outlets and streaming platforms.
