Mastodon has announced its ninth studio album, “Marrow Deep,” set for release Aug. 28 via Loma Vista Recordings. The announcement arrives alongside the debut of the new single “Snakes For Dinner,” which features a guest vocal appearance from Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, marking his first collaboration with the band since 2006’s “Colony of Birchmen.” Homme also appears in the song’s accompanying music video. The album is Mastodon’s first full-length release in five years, following 2021’s Hushed and Grim.
Marrow Deep also marks the band’s first studio album since the death of former guitarist Brent Hinds, who died in a motorcycle accident last year after departing the group. Founding members Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher are joined by guitarist Nick Johnston, while keyboardist João Nogueira contributes throughout the record. Co-produced by the band alongside Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou at West End Sound in Atlanta, the 12-track album draws inspiration from the Three Fates of Greek mythology while exploring themes of life, loss and resilience.
The announcement follows the recent release of “Your Ghost Again,”and the short film “The Mastodon in the Room,” which honored Hinds and addressed the band’s transition into a new chapter. In announcing the project, Mastodon said, “It’s been quite the journey making this album, and we are very happy with how it came out, we can not wait for you to hear the whole thing!” Sanders also described the band’s renewed chemistry, saying the current lineup has rekindled the same excitement and creative energy that defined the group’s earliest years. Mastodon will also hit the road in support of Marrow Deep on its upcoming Poisonous Weapons Tour, with Deafheaven and Alcest joining as support on select dates.
