Mastodon has released an animated video for “In the Ruins,” the latest preview of its upcoming album, “Marrow Deep,” dropping Aug. 28 through Loma Vista Recordings. The project marks Mastodon’s first full-length album since former guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds’ death, and its first studio album to feature guitarist Nick Johnston, with keyboardist João Nogueira also contributing. The 12-track record was produced by the band with Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou and mixed by Andrew Scheps.
In The Ruins is the band’s third advance track from the project follows “Your Ghost Again” and “Snakes For Dinner,” the latter featuring Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme. The song draws heavily from bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders’ experience after Hurricane Helene devastated his family’s home in 2024. The storm caused severe flooding and destroyed personal belongings, leaving the family displaced for nearly two years. That upheaval unfolded alongside the deaths of Hinds and Brann Dailor’s mother, Michele Lawrence, giving the song a broader emotional focus on grief, loss and resilience.
The accompanying video, created by animation and visual-effects studio Hey Beautiful Jerk, follows a one-eyed character named Frank as he moves through flooded, destroyed landscapes. The concept emerged after the studio’s creator spent 10 hours in an emergency room with a severe eye infection and connected the experience to conversations with Dailor about the song’s themes.
The band will support the album on the road with its “Poisonous Weapons” North American tour, beginning Sept. 16 in Orlando, Florida, with Deafheaven and Alcest. The run includes stops in Philadelphia, Boston, Brooklyn, Los Angeles and Atlanta before concluding Oct. 24 in the Dallas area.
