Pantera to hold two-day New Orleans festival for 30th anniversary of ‘The Great Southern Trendkill’

Pantera will mark the 30th anniversary of its 1996 album “The Great Southern Trendkill” with a two-day heavy metal festival in New Orleans this fall, bringing the band back to the city for its first performance there in three decades.

Dubbed ‘The Great NOLA Trendkill,’ the event is scheduled for Nov. 20-21 at Lakefront Arena. Pantera will headline a lineup that also includes Down, Black Label Society, Power Trip, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, Eyehategod, Pig Destroyer, Rāde and Herakleion. Organizers said individual-day lineups will be announced later.

The festival is being presented by Housecore Horror, Housecore Records and Live Nation. It also will feature the return of the Housecore Horror Festival, an event founded by Pantera and Down vocalist Philip Anselmo. The weekend will additionally serve as the official release celebration for Down’s forthcoming “Volume V” album.

The New Orleans connection carries particular significance for “The Great Southern Trendkill.” Released May 7, 1996, the album was recorded in separate locations, with guitarist Dimebag Darrell, bassist Rex Brown and drummer Vinnie Paul working in Texas while Anselmo recorded his vocals at Nothing Studios in New Orleans. The record became Pantera’s fourth consecutive top-10 album on the Billboard 200 and was later certified platinum in the United States.
