Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers celebrate 50th anniversary with ‘Origins 1971-1978’ box set

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are marking their 50th anniversary with a deep dive into the band’s formative years. The Tom Petty Estate announced that Origins 1971-1978, a comprehensive archival box set, will arrive Nov. 6 through UMe, chronicling Petty’s development from his early Mudcrutch recordings through the formation and rise of the Heartbreakers.

Origins 1971-1978 also contains 50th anniversary editions of the band’s first two albums, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and You’re Gonna Get It!, newly mixed and remastered by longtime producer and engineer Ryan Ulyate. The set includes the complete Live From the Record Plant 1977 performance, featuring Al Kooper, as well as the rarities collection The Cut Out Bin.

The collection spans 51 tracks, including 27 previously unreleased, live, extended or previously unheard recordings. Its centerpiece, No Sleep Til L.A., follows Petty’s musical progression from early sessions in Miami and Tulsa to his work in Los Angeles and features seven previously unreleased songs. One of those tracks, “Parade of Loons,” recorded in 1978, has been released ahead of the box set along with a video starring Iain Armitage (Young Sheldon), which you can watch via YouTube.  Additionally, Petty’s estate shared the music video for the extended, newly mixed version of “Fooled Again (I Don’t Like It)”, directed by Alan Bibby. The video draws on the band’s 1978 performance on the BBC’s The Old Grey Whistle Test.  Check it out: HERE.

The release will be available as a five-LP set, four-CD edition and expanded deluxe configuration. The vinyl edition adds an 88-page fanzine containing archival photographs, memorabilia and annotations, along with collectibles and other period material. No Sleep Til L.A. will also be released separately on LP, CD and a limited Zoetrope vinyl edition; presave/preorder: HERE.
