Alice in Chains is commemorating the 30th anniversary of its acclaimed MTV Unplugged performance with a newly remastered reissue celebrating one of the band’s most memorable live releases. The anniversary edition arrives three decades after the 1996 performance, which reunited the band’s classic lineup for one of its final concerts featuring late frontman Layne Staley. The collection, available on CD and vinyl on September 25th, will be available in multiple formats, including vinyl and expanded collector’s editions featuring updated packaging and exclusive memorabilia.
Originally recorded for MTV’s celebrated acoustic series at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the performance showcased stripped-down versions of songs spanning the band’s catalog, including favorites from Dirt, Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains. The set has long been regarded as one of the defining installments in the MTV Unplugged franchise, praised for its intimate atmosphere and emotionally charged performances.
The anniversary release includes newly remastered audio and limited-edition packaging designed for longtime fans and collectors. Select editions feature exclusive artwork, a replica of the original concert laminate, behind-the-scenes photographs and other commemorative items honoring the historic performance. The reissue continues a growing trend of legacy artists revisiting milestone live recordings through deluxe archival releases.
The announcement comes as Alice in Chains’ MTV Unplugged remains a landmark in the band’s history and a standout release of the 1990s alternative rock era. The performance continues to resonate with fans, serving as both a celebration of the group’s musical legacy and a lasting tribute to Staley’s powerful vocal performance.
