Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder has shared his new solo track, “Better Believe,” which he debuted during the opening celebration of the Obama Presidential Center, using the occasion to spotlight young artists from the nonprofit organization Guitars Over Guns. Rather than perform familiar material, Vedder introduced the original song developed alongside Chicago-area students participating in the music mentorship program.
“Better Believe” was written with members of Guitars Over Guns, an organization that pairs professional artists with young people through free music education programs aimed at fostering creativity and reducing violence. Audio arts students and alumni from Columbia College Chicago also contributed to the recording process. Proceeds from the song are earmarked to support the nonprofit and expand opportunities for future participants.
The performance of ‘Better Believe‘ featured the group of teenage musicians and vocalist; and Vedder said the project reflected the values of the new center, emphasizing opportunity, mentorship and access to creative resources. Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama joined the audience in applauding the collaboration, which came during a star-studded ceremony in Chicago’s Jackson Park that included appearances and performances by Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bono, The Edge, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Christina Aguilera, Common and The Roots. The Obama Presidential Center officially opened to the public June 19; Vedder, a longtime supporter of the Obamas, previously participated in events tied to Barack Obama’s presidency and chose the occasion to focus attention on the next generation of musicians rather than his own catalog.
